The takeaway food market turned over $1.6 billion in transactions during 2019 and is estimated to be worth $22 billion to the Australian economy. Supermarket and grocery retailers are in a great position to provide healthier and more affordable grab-and-go meals that help customers with busy lifestyles put a good meal on the table after a long day at work or to grab a quick breakfast or lunch on-the-go

Ground zero for grab-and-go meals in grocery retailing is the cooked chicken. And while margins on the universal favourite have been eroded in recent years, they can easily be restored by upselling hot sides.

There’s only one type of hot food that is more popular than the hot chicken and that’s hot chips. There are great suppliers in the market place for products that fry up crispy and golden. Best of all, hot chips offer incredible margins of 70%+.

Roasted veg

Introduce even greater nutritional variety by holding steamed veg such as peas and broccoli fresh and hot in the Flexeserve® Zone for up to several hours when held in the right packaging.

Frozen vegetable products can be very easy to prepare with a steam setting on the combi oven and then put into containers to display in.

Pasta

There’s always someone in the family who wants to eat something different from the rest of you. A lasagna or mac and cheese is a great side that helps to keep everyone happy.

Most supermarkets carry heat at-home versions of these products that can simply be preheated and held in the Flexeserve® Zone. For more premium products, investigating local suppliers is the way-to-go.

Gravy

Don’t leave out the trimmings! Gravy is also a popular product with a great margin that is a quick and easy upsell to a hot roast chicken meal. You can buy in premade gravy that just needs heating or there are individual serving size retail packs that can be heated and sold hot or sold cold displayed outside or next to the Flexeserve® Zone as a good add-on sale.

And if you are prepared to make up some gravy instore, then you can magnify your margins higher again.
